Environmental Disasters
Toxic Torts and Environmental Pollution
Villari, Giannone and Matteo represent victims of environmental pollution (also known as toxic torts) to obtain (1) remediation and monetary damages for their property damage, (2) compensation for their personal injuries, and (3) medical monitoring for those people who have been exposed to toxic substances but who do not yet have any symptoms. As environmental, pollution, and toxic tort laws become more complex, our firm is committed to maintaining its unique ability to provide a broad range of services to clients faced with the most pressing medical, legal, and public policy concerns. Examples of environmental pollution and toxic torts include:
Fly ash
This is a waste product from burning coal. It is commonly created and disposed of by electric power companies that burn coal to produce electricity. Fly ash contains several deadly toxins, including arsenic. If it is not disposed of properly, it can leach or run into local streams, rivers, water tables, wells and reservoirs, thereby polluting drinking water, causing damage to crops and livestock, and endangering the members of the community who drink or are exposed to the water.
Benzene, Hexane, Toluene, Xylene and other rubber solvents
These are chemicals or chemical compounds. Extended exposure to these chemicals can cause certain types of cancer and other diseases, such as acute myelogenous leukemia (AMI), Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), chronic lymphatic leukemia (CCL) or myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
Toxic mold
Many times unusual concentrations of mold are found in homes with recent heating or air conditioning installations or maintenance, and in newly built homes where proper ventilation was not created by the designer or builder. Exposure to this mold can result in chronic, permanent respiratory conditions such as reactive airway disease and asthma.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Unnatural concentrations of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)
Heavy metals
Such as poisoning from or excessive exposure to lead or mercury.
Pesticides
